The Rest of the Story
“On YouTube I can only tell you the version the platform allows. Careful. Contained. True, but trimmed at the edges. The book is the rest.”
On YouTube I can only tell you the version the platform allows — careful, contained, true, but trimmed at the edges. The book is the rest: the childhood that made the marriage make sense, the marriage that made the leaving necessary, and the leaving itself, told the way it actually happened, from the inside, in my own words.

My name is Hannah. I grew up Old Order Amish in Holmes County, Ohio. I married at nineteen, I left at twenty-seven, and this book is the first place I have told the whole of it — slowly, in order, in my own words.
You won't find posed photographs of me here — we didn't hold with them. A camera pointed at a face was never a simple thing in our world, and old habits hold. So instead of my picture, I will show you what my hands held every morning for years: the prayer cap, the work table, the window I stood at while I was deciding.
What I can promise you is the truth as it happened. Not the trimmed version you get in ten-minute videos. The rest of it — the childhood that made the marriage make sense, the marriage that made the leaving necessary, and the leaving itself.
If you have ever sat in a kitchen like the one I left, with your hands folded in your lap, wondering whether the life you are living is the only one available to you — I wrote this for you.
I see you.

The short version — the long version is the book.
Raised Old Order Amish in the largest Amish settlement in the world — the Ordnung, the church Sundays, the quilting bees.
A parlor courtship, a wedding, and a life begun the way every Amish girl's was supposed to begin.
Motherhood — the most tender and the most demanding thing I have ever known.
Two packed bags, and a door I spent years finding the courage to even look for.
The whole story, told slowly, in my own words — for the woman still deciding.
My name is Hannah. For years I have told my story in ten-minute videos — the things my community would never allow me to say out loud. And I am grateful, truly grateful, for every woman who has watched.
But a video can only hold so much. There are whole rooms of my life that simply cannot fit inside an episode. If the videos are the truth from behind the prayer cap, this book is what was underneath the cap the whole time — the parts I could never lift it far enough to show you.
For a long time I thought I was writing this to be heard. My community had decided what my story meant before I ever got to tell it myself, and part of me needed to take the telling back. But somewhere along the way — in the letters from women who recognized their own kitchens in mine — the reason grew larger than me.
I am writing it so that a woman sitting in a kitchen like the one I left, with her hands folded in her lap, might read these pages and recognize her own life in them a little earlier than I recognized mine. Not so she will do what I did. I would never presume to tell another woman what to do with her life. Only so she will know, while she is still deciding, that she is not imagining it, that she is not alone in it — and that the story does not have to end the way the people around her say it must.

Before you decide — taste the voice. This is the opening of the book, exactly as written.
On the mornings when I sit down to write, I am up before the sun, at a kitchen table in a house that is quiet in a way my old house never was. My tea stays hot for as long as I want it to. There is no wood stove to feed first, no school lunches to wrap in wax paper, no list of chores pinned to the icebox door in someone else's handwriting. There is no icebox anymore, for that matter. The list, if there is one, is mine alone to make.
I notice these things. I notice them every morning, the way a person who has been thirsty a long time notices water. And the quiet still surprises me, even now. It took me years to believe I was allowed to keep it.
— From the book
From the girl I was taught to be, through courtship, marriage, and motherhood, to the woman who left at twenty-seven and is speaking now.
“On YouTube I can only tell you the version the platform allows. Careful. Contained. True, but trimmed at the edges. The book is the rest.”
“A childhood can be beautiful and still be the place where you were shaped into someone who would one day struggle to say no. Both things are true.”
“I said yes. Willingly. I chose Jonas, and for a long time I believed, with my whole heart, that he had chosen me.”
“It felt like being asked to perform a ceremony I had never been taught, in a language I had never learned, while everyone I loved waited outside the door pretending the ceremony was simple.”
“What do you call it when the harm arrives disguised entirely as love?”
“True consent has to be renewable.”
“Forty years, and I have learned to be grateful for the noise. Silence is worse.” — Fannie
“I have made a good life here. And I am not sure I can stay.”
“I see you. … Take it when you are ready. I will be here, telling the truth from behind the prayer cap.”
You have every right to be careful about whose story you let into your home. So here is mine, stated plainly.
It is not sensationalism. Nothing in these pages was written to make you gasp. Difficulty is not the same as spectacle, and I have not confused the two.
It is not gossip about real people. I have changed nothing essential — but I protect the privacy of those I love. My daughters' lives are theirs.
It is not invented drama. The dramatic version helps no one. The slow truth is the one that might actually help someone.
It is not an attack on everyone I left behind. There were good people in my community. A system can be gentle in its language and still do harm — both things can be true at once.
