A Memoir · Now Available

I grew up Old Order Amish in Holmes County, Ohio. I married at nineteen. I left at twenty-seven. This is my story.

On YouTube I can only tell you the version the platform allows — careful, contained, true, but trimmed at the edges. The book is the rest: the childhood that made the marriage make sense, the marriage that made the leaving necessary, and the leaving itself, told the way it actually happened, from the inside, in my own words.

Why I wrote this book

Some truths can only be told slowly.

My name is Hannah. For years I have told my story in ten-minute videos — the things my community would never allow me to say out loud. And I am grateful, truly grateful, for every woman who has watched.

But a video can only hold so much. There are whole rooms of my life that simply cannot fit inside an episode. If the videos are the truth from behind the prayer cap, this book is what was underneath the cap the whole time — the parts I could never lift it far enough to show you.

I am not telling you this story to shock you. Nothing in these pages is here to make you gasp. Everything here is here because it happened, because it shaped me, and because somewhere, I believe, there is a woman reading who needs to know she is not the only one it happened to.

For a long time I thought I was writing this to be heard. My community had decided what my story meant before I ever got to tell it myself, and part of me needed to take the telling back. But somewhere along the way — in the letters from women who recognized their own kitchens in mine — the reason grew larger than me.

I am writing it so that a woman sitting in a kitchen like the one I left, with her hands folded in her lap, might read these pages and recognize her own life in them a little earlier than I recognized mine. Not so she will do what I did. I would never presume to tell another woman what to do with her life. Only so she will know, while she is still deciding, that she is not imagining it, that she is not alone in it — and that the story does not have to end the way the people around her say it must.

— Hannah

Inside the book

The journey, in nine parts.

From the girl I was taught to be, through courtship, marriage, and motherhood, to the woman who left at twenty-seven and is speaking now.

IntroductionPages 6–14

The Rest of the Story

“On YouTube I can only tell you the version the platform allows. Careful. Contained. True, but trimmed at the edges. The book is the rest.”

Why this book had to exist — and who it was written for: the woman who may see herself in it.

Part OnePages 15–31

Where I Come From

“A childhood can be beautiful and still be the place where you were shaped into someone who would one day struggle to say no. Both things are true.”

Growing up Old Order in Holmes County — the Ordnung, church Sundays, quilting bees, canning season, and the slow, careful education of a daughter about what her future was supposed to be.

Part TwoPages 32–47

Nineteen

“I said yes. Willingly. I chose Jonas, and for a long time I believed, with my whole heart, that he had chosen me.”

Courtship and the wedding — singings, buggy rides home, a parlor courtship in full view of both families, and what a nineteen-year-old bride was never told.

Part ThreePages 48–61

The Wedding Night

“It felt like being asked to perform a ceremony I had never been taught, in a language I had never learned, while everyone I loved waited outside the door pretending the ceremony was simple.”

The silence around intimacy — told with dignity and restraint, plus the letter she wishes someone had written her first.

Part FourPages 62–83

Learning to Be a Wife

“What do you call it when the harm arrives disguised entirely as love?”

The coldness, and the bishop at the kitchen table — the three tools every wife was given (patience, usefulness, silence), and the evening that changed everything.

Part FivePages 84–103

The Night After the Long Labor

“True consent has to be renewable.”

Motherhood's fiercest love — and its hardest night. Two daughters, an all-night labor, and what she finally understood, years later, about the difference between consent and compliance.

Part SixPages 104–121

The Women Around Me

“Forty years, and I have learned to be grateful for the noise. Silence is worse.” — Fannie

Her mother, her mother-in-law, Fannie, Barbara — the quiet network of women who held her up, and the coded language they spoke in kitchens and quilting rooms.

Part SevenPages 122–139

The Years of Quiet

“I have made a good life here. And I am not sure I can stay.”

Doubt as weather, not a door. Loving God while questioning the system, watching her daughters grow, and the slow arithmetic of a mother deciding.

Part EightPages 140–158

Twenty-Seven

“I see you. … Take it when you are ready. I will be here, telling the truth from behind the prayer cap.”

The quiet leaving — two packed bags, the grocery store, the laundromat, the first paycheck with her own name on it — and the hand she holds out at the end.

Yes — this is my memoir, my life as I lived it. I have changed nothing essential, though I am careful with the privacy of others: my daughters' lives are theirs, and I protect what belongs to them. The faith, the work, the tenderness, the control, and the leaving are all told the way they happened.
